Kathryn Gustafson // Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain

Opened in 2004 in Hyde Park

A stunning form delicately carved into the existing landscape with a light touch. In plan, the shape resembles an irregular ellipse, perhaps referencing a heart or lungs; there are no straight lines—everything is organic, in harmony with the world around it. In elevation, the fountain flows gently away from the viewer, barely rising from the landscape but offering a subtle point of interest, a quiet visual. From a distance, these two views do not reveal any friction within the memorialised life, but up close, the water flows within various exquisitely formed CNC-cut granite water features, telling a life story across many terrains before eventually draining away, only to be remembered again as it circulates. The quietly complex nature of this installation speaks to a connection to the landscape—water, typography, built form, surfaces, vegetation, and most importantly, in this instance, to us
