MUTABILIS // Place Jacques Febvrier
A striking and small project on a small budget, aimed to disrupt the existing status quo. As you can see from Google Maps, the area was a rundown, average car-filled street, but now, once again, pedestrians, cyclists, etc. are free to roam. The project is based on a shift in urban planning and the arrival of a new tramway in 2030. The shock of the blue invites reactions in an otherwise uneventful area. There is community involvement as well from a local college. The space speaks to hope and new beginnings; the color refers to Delft blue pottery. It is also calming and positive. It is a transient piece, and the color will fade; however, I presume it will be revisited before this happens once the tram works start. It's a burst of excitement and progressive change. I think wonderful that a city can shift and morph in ephemeral ways before larger structural change, impacting local attitude and setting the scene.
I also admire the quick simple sketch plans for the project, detailed yet lively, not bogged down with the detail of big accurate/photo real renders.
