Olin // THE BARNES FOUNDATION

Laurie Olin is a founding partner of Olin Landscape Architects. The studio's work at the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia is modernist with a strong relationship with water and its reflective, calming qualities. It speaks, in part, to Peter Walker's design for the sculpture garden in Dallas and to the work of Dan Keily.

I've chosen this image as it speaks to tranquility in the public realm. The water has an otherworldly effect on the space, reflecting the built form both literally and figuratively in its flat, unbroken surface and rectangular retaining walls. It also shows how, with the right lighting, a space can feel warm and inviting as the sun goes down, with trees casting wonderful shadows across the linear surface of the gallery. The photographed space is transitory; there are no benches or spaces to sit on the grass, setting a mood of reflection as you approach the buildling.
